Coronaviruses (CoV) are a family of viruses which cause a range of illnesses, ranging from the common cold to severe respiratory conditions. Earlier this year, a new strain of the coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was identified as the cause of several cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, China, and it has since spread worldwide. It has been reported that those with 2019-nCoV experience mild to severe respiratory issues, starting with a fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
It’s important to ensure that we inform people and create awareness about what you can do to protect yourself. With this knowledge, you can implement measures to support and strengthen our immunity. This is important for all of us, but especially for at-risk members of the population, particularly those with existing underlying medical conditions, as well as young children, the elderly, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Knowing who is more are risk, it’s important to protect yourself by strengthening your immune system as much as possible during this period and beyond.

At present, there is little information available to understand how to tackle this Coronavirus. No vaccines are available and the news is frequently reporting a wider spread of the virus amongst the global population. As mentioned above, there is certain demographics that are suspectable to this virus more than others, however, boosting your immune system as much as possible to protect yourself and help your body to stay strong is key.

1. Take a high strength and good quality Multi-vitamin
There are certain nutrients that contribute to your daily immune system and help you protect yourself from on-going daily bacteria and viruses. High strength and high-quality food-based multi-vitamin provides zinc, vitamin A, base levels of vitamin C and D amongst other nutrients and antioxidants that will nutritionally balance you and support your immune system.
2. Raise your antioxidant levels through fresh foods
Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables allow us to increase our antioxidant levels in our body. This enables us to fight against the nasties and ensures our body is strong and can protect against such viruses better. Taking a high-quality food based multi-vitamin will help with this tip.
3. Consistently take Probiotics
Some of you will be aware of how important good bacteria is for our immune system and our gut. Probiotics are good bacteria and supplement our current levels and ensure we have better gut health which will indirectly strengthen our immune system. The strength of our immune system stems from your strength of our gut so, for me, this is an important supplement.
4. Eat prebiotic fibrous foods
Fibrous and fermented foods contain prebiotics that supports and feed the probiotics in your gut and body. The probiotics need the prebiotics to grow, shrive and multiply so the more onions, garlic, leeks, Jerusalem artichoke, raw sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha you can consume on a daily basis the better. You should be looking for foods that contain inulin fibre as this is the prebiotic element of the foods.
5. Increase your hand hygiene levels
The spread of bacteria is easier when we practice poor hygiene. It’s vital that we are washing our hands with anti-bacterial hand wash to kill the majority of the bad bacteria on our hands. We touch our foods, face and mouth with our hands. It's important to have increased hygiene levels with the virus on the spread.
6. Take extra Vitamin C
An extra high dose of vitamin C is important to support and boost your immune system. This could a combination of foods that contain high levels of vitamin C and a supplement. Either way, get it down you. I take an extra 1000mg of vitamin C daily on top of my multivitamins and daily intake of fruits and vegetables that contain vitamin C to ensure that I give my body the best chance to fight off the nasties. Spread the dose of vitamin C through the day as its water-soluble and therefore the excess with come out through your urine.
7. Take extra Vitamin D3
Low levels of vitamin D can lower your immune system and in the UK a majority suffer from lower levels of vitamin D. We just don’t get the right quality and consistency of UV-rays that help us convert vitamin D within our bodies. You can get the most vitamin D from sunlight, however, that can be a challenge in the UK. Vitamin D rich foods include oily fish, eggs, milk and mushrooms. It can be difficult to get consistent levels from food so I take a vitamin D supplement every day. Having had very low levels of vitamin D in the past, I take 2000IU daily to ensure I never have an issue again. The minimum adult level is 1000IU daily and 400IU for children.
8. Take an Elderberry supplement temporarily
Elderberry is very immune boosting. It contains high levels of vitamin C and has scientific research links to protecting us against viruses. It works wonders when you’re coming down with a cold or cough and we get great results with our customers when they take Elderberry to help them recover from a cold. This is one that I wouldn’t take normally on a daily basis unless I wasn’t feeling well, but with this virus spreading, it’s worth adding to the daily supplement routine temporarily.
9. Manage your stress to aid restful sleep
Life can be stressful. This can impact us consciously and subconsciously. Stress levels can manifest in different ways. For some, it impacts their sleep which is really important. People undervalue sleep and don’t take stress and the impact of stress seriously sometimes. Sleep is the opportunity for our body to ‘rest and repair’ and is just as important as nutrition when looking to strengthen our immune system. Aim for 8 hours or more uninterrupted sleep per night with the help of an eye mask, earplugs, increased intake of calming nutrients such as magnesium, ashwagandha or CBD.

I appreciate that this seems a lot to do and also a lot more costly than you might be planning on spending on yourself. I get that and completely understand that this may not affordable in such a short space of time. I think it's important to do the best you can and within your means.
